WMS is an abbreviation for Web Map Service, a standard protocol for serving maps over the Internet.

WMTS stands for Web Map Tile Service and it is also a standard for serving maps over the Internet.

The main difference between WMS and WMTS is in the process how the protocols serve map from a server to a client: while WMS delivers one image per request, the WMTS serves image divided into smaller tiles, mostly in 256x256 pixels in size.
